Wente Vineyards: Five Generations of Family Winemaking in Livermore

By Eduardo Ledesma, Real Estate Consultant & Auctioneer · DRE# 01198626

Golden-hour rows of grapevines at Wente Vineyards in Livermore, the Livermore Valley rolling toward oak-covered hills
“For more than 140 years, the Wente family has done something rare in the wine world: stayed put, stayed family-owned, and kept making the Livermore Valley a better place to live, work, and visit.”

Some places define a region, and Wente Vineyards defines Livermore. It is the oldest continuously operated, family-owned winery in the United States, founded in 1883 by Carl H. Wente, and five generations of the same family still farm the same Livermore Valley hills today. Whether you are a wine lover, a weekend visitor, or a buyer considering the Tri-Valley, this is a story worth knowing.

A family story that began in 1883

Carl H. Wente immigrated from Germany in 1870 and learned winemaking from Charles Krug in Napa Valley before purchasing about 48 acres of land in the Livermore Valley in 1883. His son Ernest followed with a breakthrough that shaped California wine: in 1912, he developed the Wente Clone of chardonnay from vine cuttings imported from France, a clone that today accounts for more than three-quarters of California's chardonnay plantings. In 1935, brothers Ernest and Herman introduced California's first varietal wine label, Sauvignon Blanc.

The estate is a designated California Historical Landmark (No. 957), and the family's commitment continues with fourth-generation chairman Eric Wente and fifth-generation winemakers now at the helm. Five generations of one family, one valley, one standard of care. That kind of continuity is rare in any business.

What makes it special

The tasting room at the estate on Arroyo Road is a genuine destination. Guests can taste in the caves, in the barrel room, or on shaded patios overlooking the vines, and walk-ins are welcome. Two restaurants anchor the property: The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards for a refined evening out and The Grill at Wente Vineyards for casual dining overlooking the golf course.

A summer concert tradition

Each summer, the estate hosts its concert series on the lawn at the Wente Estate Amphitheater, with lawn seating, live music, and a glass of wine included with admission. The season runs June through September, joined by events like the Jazz Festival in the Vineyards each October and summer movie nights on the lawn. It is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend an evening in the Tri-Valley.

Why this matters for Livermore homebuyers

When I work with buyers and sellers in Livermore, the wine country heritage is part of what I love about the city. Livermore is the Bay Area's original wine country, home to more than 50 wineries, with a median home price around $1.1 million as of 2026 and neighborhoods ranging from the walkable downtown to the ranch estates of South Livermore. A community with roots this deep holds its value: generational family businesses, protected open space, and a calendar full of community events are exactly what make a city a great place to put down roots.

Next time you are in Livermore, drive out Arroyo Road, pour a glass on the patio, and take in the view that five generations of the Wente family have called home. You will understand immediately why so many people want to stay in the Livermore Valley. I would be glad to help you find your own piece of it.
